Closing the Gap for Women with Coronary Artery Disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death among women. Important sex differences in CVD risk factors, pathophysiology, presenting symptoms, treatment, preventive strategies and outcomes are increasingly recognised. The traditional cardiovascular risk factors increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in women more than they do in men. Women can also have nontraditional cardiovascular risk factors such as gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and polycystic ovary syndrome. More focus on female-specific features of CVD might help the development of targeted therapeutic interventions for both primary and secondary prevention in women.

Nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a common problem in childhood. Epidemiological studies show that 15-22% of boys and 7-15% of girls at seven years of age are bedwetters. These percentages lower to 1-2% among adolescents and young adults.1 Although time constraints can often lead to the inadequate addressing of psychological effects, it is prudent to consider expanding patient visits so time is available to screen for these life-altering concerns.

In many cases, the decision-making process becomes difficult due to personal and professional beliefs, as well as institutional
and legal requirements placed upon the healthcare provider. This phenomenon, known as moral distress, is “when one knows the right thing to do, but institutional or health system constraints make it nearly impossible to pursue the right course of action”.
