Central vision loss caused by age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness among the elderly in developed countries. Clinical trial outcomes in neovascular age-related macular degeneration often have not been replicated in routine clinical practice, partly due to the difficulty for patients, carers, and health care providers following optimum treatment regimens, leading to under-treatment, and also because real-world cohorts of patients and measurement techniques are different from those in randomised controlled clinical trials.
