Absolute Fracture Risk What does it mean for your patient?

Absolute Fracture Risk What does it mean for your patient? – MM1604

Fracture prevention is the main goal of treatment for osteoporosis. AbsoluteĀ fracture risk calculators have been developed that aim to better quantify fractureĀ risk and may help to guide treatment decisions in certain situations. It may alsoĀ help to clarify situations of low absolute fracture risk where treatment is notĀ indicated.
Absolute fracture risk calculators incorporate clinical risk factors as wellĀ as bone mineral density into risk estimations. Commonly used fracture riskĀ calculators are the WHO Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) and theĀ Garvan Fracture Risk Calculator (GFRC).

Factors Influencing Vitamin D Status in Urban African Black and Asian-Indian Adults

Factors Influencing Vitamin D Status in Urban African Black and Asian-Indian Adults – MM1507

Vitamin D deficiency has been implicated in the aetiology ofĀ numerous infectious diseases and metabolic syndrome which areĀ prevalent in the African and Asian-Indian populations of SouthĀ Africa. Why Use Parenteral Therapies for Osteoporosis?

Why Use Parenteral Therapies for Osteoporosis? – MM1507

Treatment options for osteoporosis have dramatically changedĀ over the past 15 years. The newer parenteral therapies, zoledronicĀ acid and teriparatide, are effective treatment options with differingĀ mechanisms of action. Here we review these new agents andĀ compare their relative merits with existing oral medications forĀ osteoporosis.

Fracture Risk Reduction in Glucocorticoid-induced Osteoporosis

Fracture Risk Reduction in Glucocorticoid-induced Osteoporosis – MM1411

Patients requiring more than three months of glucocorticoid therapyĀ should be assessed with regards to their fracture risk. CalciumĀ and vitamin D supplementation is recommended as preventiveĀ therapy for all patients taking glucocorticoids, and pharmacologicalĀ intervention should also be considered.
