Chronic Rhinosinusitis: Alleviating symptoms and improving quality of life

Sinus complaints are common and can be attributed to a variety of rhinological and nonrhinological disorders. Despite overlapping symptomatology, history, examination and imaging can differentiate chronic rhinosinusitis from rhinitis, sinonasal neoplasms and nonsinogenic pathology, such as headache or migraine disorders. Chronic rhinosinusitis is a disease of persistent sinonasal inflammation for which corticosteroid therapy provides patients with symptomatic relief and an improved quality of life. Biological therapy is available for refractory disease. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery provides a means for long-term management with use of topical therapies alone.

Metabolic Decline can Point to the Thyroid

Metabolic Decline can Point to the Thyroid

Hypothyroidism is defined as failure of the thyroid gland to produce sufficient thyroid hormone to meet the metabolic demands of the body. Untreated hypothyroidism can contribute to hypertension, dyslipidaemia, infertility, cognitive impairment and neuromuscular dysfunction. Thyroid hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine, the exogenous form of T4, has been the gold standard for the treatment of primary hypothyroidism for more than 60 years.

Type 2 Diabetes in Young Adult: A management guide for GPs

Type 2 Diabetes in Young Adults: A management guide for GPs

Type 2 diabetes is increasing among young adults, who are at higher risk of early complications and mortality and require a nuanced approach to management. Clinicians can be guided by recommendations from the recently published Australian consensus statement on the management of type 2 diabetes in young adults, which highlights areas where management might differ from that of older adults. GPs play an important role in identifying type 2 diabetes in young adults and are encouraged to facilitate access to endocrinologists and specialised multidisciplinary care teams where available. GPs are pivotal in providing support and education, particularly with respect to pregnancy, contraception and psychological health, and in providing continuity of care, especially during transition periods.

The Quiet Epidemic of Doctors: Suffering in Silence

The Quiet Epidemic of Doctors: Suffering in Silence

Stop the Distressing Nausea and Vomiting of Chemo or Surgery

Stop the Distressing Nausea and Vomiting of Chemo or Surgery

Nausea and vomiting can be clinically significant and severely debilitating side effects of cytotoxic chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and certain types of surgery. These symptoms can represent a major therapeutic challenge and, if inadequately controlled by antiemetic treatment, will limit a patient’s ability or desire to eat and drink, significantly reduce quality of life, threaten the success of therapy and result in increased mortality, morbidity and also healthcare costs.

Chronic Pain: Complexities in adolescents and young adults

Chronic Pain: Complexities in adolescents and young adults

Adolescents and young adults experience chronic pain at similar rates to adults. Chronic pain in this group is associated with a high prevalence of adverse childhood experiences, mental health difficulties and neurodiversity. Recovery from persistent pain is the aim of developmentally sensitive therapy. Therapy includes validating the young person’s pain experience and needs-based interventions that focus on the mind–body connection and security in interpersonal relationships.
