Many people with a normal thyroid function may present to GPs with complaints of mild symptoms suggestive of hypothyroidism. Therefore, biochemical confirmation of true hypothyroidism is mandatory. There is no evidence that thyroxine treatment of suggestive symptoms is beneficial when tests are normal.
