Approximately 1.6 million new cases of lung cancer\u00a0are diagnosed each year. The overall cure rate from lung cancer is\u00a0modest (approximately 17%) because majority of patients present\u00a0with advanced stage at diagnosis. This is irrespective of refinements\u00a0in histological aspects, better diagnostic and staging tools, including\u00a0the massive influence of positron emission tomography (PET)<br \/>\nscanning, as well as a sharp shift towards molecular oncology\u00a0already finding its way into clinical practice.
